The Sunken Lane at Beaumont Hamel: half way across no man's land on 1st July 1916, the 1st Lancashire fusiliers—famously filmed here by Geoffrey Malins— tunneled up into this natural trench only to meet a terrible fate after going over the top. Many fell in or crawled back to this spot. Later formed part of the British front line.
