Italy/Venice: Christoforo Moro (1390 - 10 November 1471), 67th Doge of Venice. Oil on canvas painting by the circle of Gentile Bellini (1429-1507), 15th century. Cristoforo Moro was the Doge of Venice (r. 1462-1471), ahiling form the patrician Moro family. Moro's reign was marked by the start of a long war between Venice and the Ottomans. In 1463 Pope Pius II sent Moro a consecrated sword with the intention of convincing Venice to join the anti-Turk alliance. The reaction in Venice was initially hesitant as the Republic's main priority was their economic interests.
