Eugenics exhibit at public fair. Display with the text 'some people are born to be a burden on the rest', with a flashing light indicating the rate of expenditure on mental healthcare. The overall birth rate is compared to: adults with the mental age of a child; criminals; and 'high grade' people. This display, dating from circa 1926, was part of the public education carried out by the American Eugenics Society (AES, founded 1923) together with strategies aiming to correct these conditions. Eugenics is the controversial practice of selectively improving the genetics of human populations. The AES was criticised for their racist assumptions and support of forced sterilizations.
