SHANTI, one of the na-tive kingdoms ofWest Africa, lyingcontiguous to theAbanta and Fanticountries, which bor-der on the Gold Coast,has once more beenthe scene of armed in-vasion by a European power. The Ashan-tis were originally a great and powerfulpeople, whose territory reached to the sea-board. In 1826 they were driven inland,and afterward, King Koffee Kalcalli in-vaded several parts of the British Protec-torate, made an attack upon Fantiland, inWhich Cape Coast Castle is situated, andheld several Europeans prisoners. Thiswas the occasion of a second Ashanti war,in 1875-4, which was conducted by SirGarnet Wolseley.
