The Danish or Great Heathen Army led by Ivar the Boneless rode across Mercia into East Anglia, and took winter-quarters at Thetford. King Edmund, aka St Edmund or Edmund of East Anglia, fought against them. Tradition suggests he met his death at an unidentified place known as Haegelisdun on 20 November 869, after he refused the Danes' demand that he renounce Christ: the Danes beat him, shot him with arrows and then beheaded him,
