Robert Grosseteste (), English scholar, scientist and theologian. He is depicted here as Bishop of Lincoln, a post he held from 1235 to his death. He is wearing the bishop's mitre and holding the crozier, with his left hand raised in blessing. Grosseteste studied at the University of Paris. Between 1220 and 1235, he wrote a number of scientific treatises, including 'De sphera' (on astronomy), 'De luce' (on cosmogony), 'De lineis, angulis et figuris' (on mathematics), and 'De iride' (on the rainbow). This illuminated manuscript initial is from the 15th-century 'Works of Robert Grosseteste, Bishop of Lincoln', held at the British Library.
