Apartment buildings in the Tiong Bahru district of Singapore.

Apartment buildings in the Tiong Bahru district of Singapore. The low buildings date back to mid 20th Century. Laundry is hung from balconies to dry. Singapore’s first housing estate, built in the 1930s to the west of Chinatown, is considered today one of Singapore’s “hippest” districts. The resident demographic remains cosmopolitan -- young and old, gay and straight, foreigners and local residents. and unlike the masses of boxy, modern Housing Development Board flats around Singapore, the Tiong Bahru apartments with their rounded balconies and shuttered windows possess a quaint art deco style.
