The elder Vanden-berg was of Mohawk River Dutch descent,and had once been the Republican post-master of Clyde, New York, under PresidentGrant. Vandenbergs grandfather was a dele-gate to the Republican convention of 1860which nominated Lincoln. Aaron Vandenberg lost his business andmost of his money in the severe depression of1893, which occurred just as a DemocraticPresident, Grover Cleveland, was beginninghis second term. Thereafter he was convincedthat the Democratic Party had set out toruin him personally. On his deathbed hecame out of a long coma to give Arthur a finalpiece of advice.
