BONNAT 86—THE BROKEN PITCHER fO An Italian child in white chemise and head-dress, and a light blue petticoat relieved by a redoverskirt tucked up from under a variegatedapron, is standing under a strong light from thezenith, which throws the figure into vigorous andsolid relief against a deep-toned background, which suggests in its indefiniteness a wood over-hanging a spring. A bit of blue sky shows nearthe upper left-hand corner of the picture, and be-hind the girl the fragments of a brown earthenpitcher are lying on the warm-colored sand. Signed at the right, Lx. Bonnat. Height, 28V& inches; width, 18*4 vocn -\ rv*-^ : RIRE DA VEIL BY JULES BASTIEN-LEPAGE JULES BASTIEN-EEPAGE 87—RIRE DAVRIL A typical French village, with its bald fa-cades, blank walls, and red-tiled roofs, is seenagainst a placid, almost cloudless spring the broken line of roof on the left, aslender fruit tree rises with a network of delicatebranches and a profusion of pink blossoms. Thewhole foreground, an area of cultivated land, broken here and there by spots of verdure and cutby a narrow stream running between grassybanks, is in shadow full of reflected light. Thefigures of two girls washing clothes in the streamgive life to the scene and add to the impression ofprimitive simplicity of intention which is thekeynote of the picture. The flash of sunlight onthe distant houses and on the spring blossomswarrants the sentiment which the title suggests. Signed at the right, J. Bastien-Lepage, Damvtl
