'Battle of Castillon', 1453 (19th century). Artist: Charles Philippe Auguste Lariviere
'Battle of Castillon', 1453 (19th century). A battle in the Hundred Years War in which the French and Breton army defeated the English under John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury. The painting depicts the moment when Talbot's horse falls. The battle was the first in European history in which the use of cannon played a decisive part, and led to the English losing all their territorial possessions in France with the exception of Calais.
