Scaliger castle with the winged lion of St Mark mounted over the entrance arch. Sirmione, on Lake Garda, Lombardy, Italy.

The winged lion sculpture represented the republic of Venice in medieval and Renaissance periods, when Sirmione was at the most western point of the republic, that covered much of present day province of Veneto. The winged lion is the attribute of St Mark in the Christian faith, who is the patron saint of the city of Venice.
