Charlotte Gilman (1860-1935), US sociologist and author. Born Charlotte Perkins, she married US artist Charles Walter Stetson in 1884. Following the birth of her daughter she developed postnatal depression, the story of which formed the basis of her short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper', published in 1892. After divorcing from her husband, she lived in Pasadena, California, writing and speaking on humanism, feminism, and women's rights. Her works included poetry, short stories, novels and works of non-fiction. She married Houghton Gilman in 1900. Her autobiography 'The Living of Charlotte Perkins Gilman' appeared posthumously in 1935. Photographed in around 1900 by Charles Fletcher Lummis (1859-1928).
