Malaria drug research. Biotechnologist using a chloroform dip to extract artemisinin from the glandular hairs of wormwood (Artemisia annua) leaves. Artemisinin is a drug used to treat multi-drug resistant strains of falciparum malaria. Falciparum malaria is a type of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum protozoa. Chloroform dipping is a highly effective procedure enabling over 90 percent of the artemisinin to be extracted.
