Comet components. Collection of ingredients thought to make up a comet. Observations made using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and finds excavated from comet Tempel 1 by the Deep Impact mission are helping astronomers to build a 'recipe' for a comet. From left to right: on plates - ice and dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide); in measuring cups - olivine, smectite clay, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, spinel, metallic iron; on table - the silicate enstatite, the carbonate dolomite, and the iron sulphide marcasite.
