Burnt forest, Alberta, Canada

The fire is important in the ecological health of a forest. Forest fires aid in recycling nutrients in a forest ecosystem, clearing dead or diseased trees or stumps, and eliminating debris that covers the forest floor. As well, some species of trees require fire in order to germinate. The fire is on many occasions started on purpose, it is called a "fire break" - purposely burned forest to protect the surrounding vast forest from the spread of forest fires, the theory being that they can then stop the fire at these "breaks".
