View NNW of part of the Chacoan road system across a cleared section of slickrock on Alto Mesa above Chetro Ketl pueblo, Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. Loose rocks were moved to the sides to create a smooth roadway lined by boulders and low walling. This road connected the Anasazi pueblos of Chetro Ketl and Pueblo Alto. There were more than 400 miles of engineered roads, mainly straight paths 13-30ft (4-9m) wide, linking sites within Chaco Canyon and to some 75 outlying communities as far away as 62 miles. In places, rock-cut stairways linked the canyon bottom to the mesa top.
