In the year1365 he published a defence of the kings refusal topay the tribute commonly called Peters pence,a service which obtained for him the friendship andprotection of the famous John of Gaunt, to whoseinfluence he was more than once indebted for escapefrom the machinations of his enemies. On his returnfrom Bruges, whither he had been sent by the king in1374, to discuss the question of tribute with the popeslegate, he published his Trialogue, in which theabuses of the papacy are powerfully attacked.
