Statue of Godfrey of Bouillon and Church of Saint Jacques-sur-Coudenberg in the Royal Square at the Koudenberg in Brussels. Godfrey of Bouillon was the leader of one of the first crusades to the Holy Lands in 1096 and he became the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. This statue was erected in the Royal Square in 1843 when the new state of Belgium wanted to legitimize its historic roots and several statues with national personae were erected.
