Aradena Gorge is a deep limestone canyon running from the Lefka Ori or White Mountains down to the South coast of Crete. Since very much centuries only one well maintained road for pack animals, normally mules, crossed the gorge to reach Aradena village at the western edge of the gorge. Die Aradena-Schlucht gräbt sich von den Lefka Ori oder Weißen Bergen durch den Kalkstein zur Südküste von Kreta. Viele Jahrhunderte lang quete nur ein einziger, gut instandgehaltener Maultierpfad die Schlucht, auf dem das Dorf Aradena auf der westlichen Schluchtseite erreicht werden konnte.
