Atmospheric pollution research. Researcher in the laboratory at the base of the PROPHET tower (Program for Research on Oxidants: Photochemistry, Emissions and Transport) at UMBS (University of Michigan Biological Station), Pellston, Michigan, USA. The 30-metre-tall tower uses instruments high above a forest canopy to obtain meteorological data and measure pollutant levels (air is piped from the top of the tower to this laboratory). The gases studied are nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds, which react in sunlight to form ozone. The PROPHET program, (began 1996) investigates how nitrogen pollutants increase plant growth, and ozone reduces it.
