This heater is guaranteedto heat the feed water to theboiling point with the ex-haust steam without causingany back pressure when thecompanys standard heater is used, and that all impurities in the feed water that will precipitateat that temperature will be deposited in the heater before the waterenters the boilers. This heater will separate and carry off the waterof condensation from the exhaust, and will extract the oil from tneexhaust so that the exhaust steam can be used for heating pur-poses, and the condensation from the heating coils be returned tothe boilers without injury to them. Probably in no part of the carequipment is this false economy more often practiced than in theair-motor compressor. Ample compressor capacity should be pro-vided to meet not only the auxiliary appliances calling for theuse of air, as well as the brakes, but also to provide against leakypipes, temporary derangement of minor parts, and other accidents. Another practice, the wisdom of which is questioned, is the en-closing of the motor compressor. While this reduces the noisesomewhat, it is claimed that it is at the sacrifice of mechanicalefficiency, and it is pointed out that whether the box is on or off,the noise to the occupant of the car is about the same, the extranoise being noticeable only to one outside, and that to no greatextent. The generation of heat is inseparable from t
