He enlisted as a machinist onCommodore Schleys fiagship, the Brooklyn,and served for one year, taking part in all thefighting on the southern coast of Cuba, includ-ing the destruction of Admiral Cervcras fleeton July 3, 1898. He received an honorabledischarge in April, 1899, as well as two beautifulmedals, one from the city of Brooklyn and onefrom Uncle Sam. Mr. Burke then returned to the Baltimoreand Ohio at Cumberland, working at thatpoint and Rowlesburg, W. Va., until February,1900, when he went to Garrett, Ind. He waspromoted to machine shop foreman in 1902,. C. W. BURKE afterward to erecting shop foreman, and, in 1906,to general foreman. He was made generalforeman at South Chicago in October, 1907,th3 position which he now holds. Mr. Burkes family is decidedly Royal father, who is nearly eighty years at Keyser, and is now drawing a pensionfrom the Company after nearly thirty yearsof service. For seventeen years he was afreight agent and was not absent from duty asingle day. Mr. Burke also has five brothersin the service, two of whom have been withthe Company for twenty-five years.
