A front room or parlour of a British house The admittance of direct sunlight is kept under control by the adjustable slatted Venetian blinds at the windows, which also have net curtains hung from a pole. The room is full of ornaments and the occasional table has an indoor plant on it. Although often viewed as being ‘modern’, Venetian Blinds date back to the mid-1700s in Venice. Their popularity spread to France in the late 1700s – the French refer to Venetians as les Persiennes. Early Venetian blinds were made of wood slats and suspended on vertical cloth ribbons. They provided a decorative and innovative alternative or addition to curtains. Englishman John Webster began selling wooden Venetian blinds in Philadelphia, USA in 1767. They became popular, and was something that could be easily manufactured locally rather than imported. In 1841 John Hampson of New Orleans created a mechanism that would control the angle of the slats, allowing more or less light through whilst still allowing for privacy. This is taken from an original black and white photograph. It will look soft if used too large – a vintage Victorian/Edwardian photograph.
