South of Mason and Dixon's line can be sown in open ground in fall, and needs only a slight protection of straw or loose litter to be perfectly hardy. Childs' Half Century. We all know how much careful YtjNJ' selection year after year has to do with tbe quality of fjjL our vegetables, but there are few things can claim a jllSjhalf-century's descent from only the choicest and Sabest specimens of one type. This Lettuce can do so, ^jwhowcver, and we are not surprised therefore at its JE3 superior qualities. Its leaves fold together, forminga long, loose head, remarkable for tenderness and delicious flavor. It may seem a good deal to say, but it is, never- theless, a fact, that for tenderness, brittleness and deli- cious quality, this Lettuce grown in the open ground sur- passes any other sort grown under glass. Nothing can approach it in quality. It is so brittle and tender that its leaves break to pieces in handling, if care is not used. Fifty years is a long time to cultivate, selectand improve any vegetable; but it has surely accomplished much in this Lettuce. It is a quick grower and attains its full size in forty to fifty davs, and remains in fine condition for a very long time. Pkt., 10c.; oz., 30c.; lb., Curled Simpson.
