The term "drawing book" can also be understood to mean a loose collection of drawings. Most drawings were made in Ceylon, as Sri Lanka was called until 1972, while only a few were manufactured during his short stay at Kaap de Goede Hoop). The bound "Tijkenboeck" consists of twenty uneven sections, a number of which are incomplete. The drawing book now contains 116 magazines, but at least 34 sheets have been cut earlier. Whether these have also contained drawings and where these magazines have gone cannot be said - they may appear again. The two water brands of the paper used by Bours indicate that the material was most likely from the Netherlands. Boursse may have taken the Dubbelfolio magazines himself, but it is also possible that he received them on the outward journey in Batavia or during his stay in Sri Lanka from an employee of the VOC. In any case, it seems clear that he has cut the large sheets of approximately 44 x cm lengthwise and folded the two leaves so that he could easily get started outside. When binding, the date thereof is not known, the magazines were cut, so that in a number of cases the drawings are no longer complete. Perhaps the collection has been in the hands of a child of a later owner, because we see in a few awkward sketches and added words. The "Tijkenboeck" was not paginated after binding, the numbering of the magazines is of a fairly recent date.
