Rock salt crystals. Rock salt is formed when sea water evaporates, leaving a sediment known as an evaporite. The regular crystals are known as cubic or isometric. Large, well-developed crystals are rare as they are unstable unless stored in zero moisture conditions. The crystals in this sample are up to 50 millimetres across. The specimen measures 35 centimetres in width and is from the salt mines of Wieliczka, Poland.
