Phycologia britannica, or, A History of British sea-weeds, containing coloured figures, generic and specific characters, synonymes, and descriptions of all the species of algae inhabiting the shores of the British Islands . it isliberated. Substance lubricous, closely adhering to paper in dryiug. The species here figured is, in many respects, similar toC. Youngana, but is a larger species. From most others it may beknown by its very lubricous and glossy tufts and soft in colour there is much outward resemblance to Bangiafuscopurpurea, though under the microscope no two plants needbe more unlike. When the plant first makes its appearance thecolouring substance nearly fills the cell, and is of a pale colour, but gradually it condenses into a small, subcylindrical and dark-coloured spore in the centre. The first specimens I received of this plant were sent to meby Mrs. Griffiths, to whom belongs the merit of having determinedits characters correctly. It has subsequently been found in twostations in Ireland, but must still be regarded as one of ourrarer species. Fig. 1. Tuft of Conferva bangioides :—the natural size. 2.
