Antibiotics research. Three different types of antibiotic being tested on colonies of typhoid bacteria (Salmonella typhi) in a petri dish. The exclusion zone around each disc demonstrates the effectiveness of that antibiotic. S. typhi causes the disease typhoid, which is transmitted in food or water that is contaminated by faeces. This bacterium causes an acute fever, abdominal pain and diarrhoea or constipation. Severe cases can lead to intestinal bleeding and death. All three of these antibiotics are effective at killing S. typhi. Grown on Mueller-Hinton agar, a nutrient agar suited to antibiotic tests.
