St. HELENA, ATLANTIC OCEAN: Islanders and tourists watch the THE FIRST ever commercial flight to the British island airport of St Helena. The British Airways 747 successfully touched down and took off today in what was an historic first ever flight to the 47 square-mile British Atlantic Ocean territory’s newly opened airport, with its 6,000-foot long runway. Regular flights 2278 miles to Johannesburg in South Africa are now due to take place. Islanders hope the route will eventually include London and Cape Town. The Duke of York Prince Andrew travelled to the remote spot to open the new airport on one of the last remnants of the British Empire, since it was colonised by the East India company in 1659. The island’s most famous resident was Emperor Napoleon, who was exiled there permeantly by the British after losing the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He died on the island in 1821. The only previous transport to and from the island was via the ship HMS St Helena, which will be retired next year.
