Rails, switches, and flanges which project above the pavementprove very objectionable. They cause unequal wear and ruts in streetsurfaces, the proper repair of which absorbs thousands of dollars ineach city. Generally the repairs are not made. Then the obstruc-tion to traffic and street-cleaning causes great expense to the privateand public purse.
