Twin Headsails – Looking up the mast aboard S/V "Lord’s Prayer"

The Sailing Vessel "Lord’s Prayer" flies her twin jibs with the headsails set on poles as she sails from Cape May NJ toward Cape Cod MA. The two identical jibs are mounted on a single roller-furler. This arrangement is more stable than a spinnaker for sailing downwind and it is more manageable, as it can be partially rolled up if the wind strengthens. On a small boat with limited space (in this case a Crealock 34), the use of a single roller furler to manage the two jibs simultaneously can be seen to have the advantages of being of less weight, bulk, cost, and complexity than the usually preferred installation of a second roller-furler when the boat is larger. This latter arrangement on a larger boat is actually easier to set and unset when space, weight, and cost are not an issue.
