Art Deco style 1928 painting by Zofia Stryjenska on the facade in Warsaw s Old Town Square

The greater part of Warsaw was completely flattened in the Second World War. The Royal Castle and the entire Old Town district were reconstructed in the following years with the aid of plans, drawings and photographs. In 1980 the old town of Warsaw was awarded the status of UNESCO world Heritage Site.
