BLAIR, Robert, a divine and poet,was born at Edinburgh, in 1699, and edu-cated at that university. He was ministerof Athelstaneford, in East Lothian, wherehe died in 1747. His poem of the Grave ispopular, and deservedly so, and has obtain-ed him a place among our standard poets. BLAIR, John, a chronologist, was anative of Edinburgh, and a near relationof Dr. Hugh Blair, who materially assistedhim in the composition of his principalwork, the Chronology and History of theWorld, which was published in 1754, andto which he afterwards added maps ofancient and modern geography. Thiswork procured him considerable churchpreferment. He died in 1782. BLA 93. BLAIR, Dr. Hugh, was born at Edin-burgh, in 1718, and was the son of a mer-cha-nt. He was educated at the universityof his native city, and was licensed topreach in 1741, when he became ministerof Colessie, in Fife. lu 1743 he was ap- Ccinted of the Canongate, Edin-urgh; in 1754 he was removed to LadyYesters ; and in 1759 to the High Church,where he continued during the remainderof his life. A professorship of rlietoricand belles lettres having been founded byhis majesty, in 1762, Dr. Blair was ap-pointed professor; and here originated hisLectures on Composition, which he pub- lished in 1783. The first volume of hiaSermons was published in 1777, and ac-quired such a rapid popularity, that henot only obtained a large sura of money forthe succeeding volumes, but was rewardedwith a pension of two hundred pounds perannum. Dr. Blair died at Edinburgh, in1800. In his Serm
