These claims were revived at the time of our occu-pation and were not finally settled until the late eightiesof the nineteenth century. The modern history of theregion begins with the acquisition, by an American syndi-cate, of certain concessions in the north from the Sultansof Brunei and Sulu. Their rights were taken over ulti-mately by a British company which obtained a charter fromthe Crown, in 1881, under the title of the British NorthBorneo Company. The charter was a revival of the oldplan for opening up new countries without the direct in er-vention or responsibility of the home Government. It wasfollowed by other charters for African companies ; but ofthese only one survives, and the North B
