Heilly Station. The Somme

The image is of Heilly Station Military Cemetery from the First World War 1914-18. The cemetery was built close to the main railway line hence the name Heilly Station. It was a forward dressing station from where the wounded could be patched-up and then sent by rail to recover. Many of the graves are two to a grave as many graves were dug in a hurry under battle conditions hence graves with double regimental insignia. The cemetery contains 2890 Commonwealth soldiers and 83 German soldiers
