Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin train at Gok Hteik station

Every day a train leaves from Mandalay to travel through mountainous terrain to the hill station of Pyin Oo Lwin, the former British Hill station of Maymyo, established in 1896 (May Town named after Colonel May, a veteran of the Indian mutiny). The train line was built by the British and it is one of South East Asia's great train routes, much loved by train afficionados. The train itself is sparse on comfort (the 1st class seats are made of coconut shell hair) and the journey itself takes twice as long as by going by road, but it is considered by train bluffs to be something of a masterpiece. A vendor is selling walking alongside the train hoping to sell food to the train passengers.
