Sampans, traditional small fishing boats, crossing Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong, China

Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong, China: sampans, traditional simply-designed flat-bottomed fishing boats made of wood. The word ‘sampan’ translates to ‘three planks of wood’ in Cantonese. Sampans date back to the 1600s AD, originated in China and were once a common mode of transport across Asia. They are mostly used in rivers and close to the coast because they are not suitable for rough seas. Some serve as permanent homes and are used for living as well as fishing.
