Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) moving up onto the river bank, Grumeti River, Serengeti, Tanzania
The rains early in the year in the Serengeti greens the landscape and gives rich grazing to the animals. This triggers the great migration of the herds of wildebeest and zebra from the south towards the north of the country. The Grumeti river floods in the heavy rains and sometimes becomes impassible, and the hippo pools fill up with water. The Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is the largest of the freshwater crocodiles, only exceeded in size by the salt water crocodiles, which are the largest of all living reptiles. This one was moving up onto the river bank on the Grumeti River, Serengeti, Tanzania. This is the same species that attacks the wildebeest as they cross the Mara River during the Great Migration.
