Operation Deep Freeze I. Dressed in foul weather parka Captain Oscar Carl Rohnke, USCG, commanding officer of the Coast Guard icebreaker Eastwind takes time to stretch his legs on the ice at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Captain Rohnke and the Eastwind was the hearts of Task Force 43 personnel while servicing the William Air Operation Facility at Hut Point, Ross Island during "Operation Deep Freeze I." For making the camp habitable and for the work hospitality they received aboard the icebreaker the men presented Captain Ronke a wooden plaque (made by the Seabees) in which was carved a paddle and an inscription saying: "To the officers and men of the CGC Eastwind who are the best--please accept this in jest on the waves that you straddle--think of us as you paddle. From all of the men at William Air Operation Facility. March 1956.".
