Work of the Colored law and order league, Baltimore, Md . , there was a query as to why the coloredman will not work. They intimated that in some cases theconditions of vice and immorality grew out of the lazinessand idleness of the men of this neighborhood as well as outof the environments of the saloons and dives. A study of 13 the statistics prepared by the United States Census Bureau, however, shows that a larger percentage of the colored menof Maryland are at work than of the whites. The committee was also asked why there is so littlehome life among the colored people. It is true that thehome life is not as desirable among colored people as itought to be and as most of us would have it; but the influxof the colored population from the alleys and small streetsof south and east Baltimore into the more desirable neigh-borhoods of northwest Baltimore, particularly upper DruidHill Avenue and the adjacent streets, shows an upwardmovement along this line, and the fact that there is a mosthealthy and promising growth of the home spirit.
