The battle of Thermopylae in Central Greece, took place in 480 BCE between 1000 Spartans and Thespians at its final stage, under king Leonidas of Sparta and hundreds of thousands of Medes and Persians invading Greece, under king Xerxes. The Greeks withstood the attacks for three days before getting encircled and killed while fighting. The battle has become a worldwide symbol of valor and self-sacrifice.
