Congenital hip dislocation. X-ray of the pelvic region of a 15-month-old girl with congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH). CDH causes the hip joint to repeatedly dislocate due a defect in the structure of the joint. Here it is caused by an abnormally shaped femoral head (upper left). The femoral head is the end of the femur (thigh bone) and forms the ball in the ball-and-socket of the hip joint. Here surgery will be used to re-shape the femoral head and a plate will be inserted to hold the femur in the correct position, in order to prevent future dislocation.
