A municipal change generally concededto be a reform — the collection of taxes byinstalments, and earlier in the year—was alsoadvocated by the Board of Trade. Among itsother municipal recommendations were the exempt . save buildings used for places ofpublic worship and for no other first recommendation is now the law ofthe land, but, like many another law, it ismore noted for its breaches than its observ-ances. To speak of all the minor matters inwhich the Board took part would be prolixrather than profitable, but it may be said in a. tENTRAL FIBE HALL. abolition of wards, a reduction of the numberof aldermen and school trustees, and theelection of women to the School Board. Amost successful matter was its petition in1890 to the Ontario Government to increasethe jurisdiction of the division courts, sinceacted upon. The Board also recommended in1875 that all property should be assessed atits real value, and that nothing should be general way that at all times it has shownitself alert to the commercial and municipalneeds of London. A cognate organization,the Chamber of Commerce, was organizedearly in the 70s, and later the Merchants andManufacturers Exchange, but in 1881 allthese bodies coalesced under the old name ofthe Board of Trade.
