Cornices in the Cairngorms, Scotland. These cornices formed on the Stob Coire Sputan Dearg ridge of the mountain Ben Macdui. This ridge peaks at an altitude of around 1249 metres. A cornice is an overhanging ledge of snow and ice that forms on a mountain ridge from wind-blown snow. Cornices can increase to large sizes but become more unstable and eventually collapse. This view, taken in January, looks southwards, over clouds, the peak of Carn a'Mhaim, and the Lairig Ghru pass.
