In 1817the territory of Mississippi was formed into a state, and in the follow-ing year Illinois was also admitted. Alabama and Maine were in alittle while added to the confederacy. In 1817, an individual styling himself Citizen Gregor McGregor,Brigadier-General of the armies of the United Provinces of NewGrenada and Venezuela, and General-in-Chief employed to liberaiethe provinces of both the Floridas, commissioned by the supreme 520. WAR WITH THE FLORIDA INDIANS. government of Mexico and South America, landed with a party ofadventurers at Amelia island, at the mouth of the St. Marys men soon showed that their object was outlawry and aggres-sion ; and when their means of perpetrating mischief were exhausted,*hey made the island a channel for the illicit introduction of slavesfrom Africa to the United States, an asylum for fugitive slaves fromthe neighbouring states, and a port for all kinds of smuggling. Asimilar estabhshment, but more extensive, was instituted on an islandin the Gulf of Mexico, near the Texan coast, under the command ofan adventurer named Aury.
