The roof is of rock, and ispierced with a shaft from the pavement above. There are also two shaftsdown from the pavement to the aqueduct, between the two rock-hewncisterns, but only one is shown on the plan. A canal 4 feet wide, cut inthe rock, and 14 feet in length, enters the cistern at the north. Atthe north end of this canal, to the east, is the entrance to a circularrock-cut cistern, of which only half can be seen, as it is cut in two by. v^i^-T- the foundation of the Sanctuary wall. To the west of this canal, andpartially over-lying the rock-cut cistern, are two rock-hewn rectangularchambers, 16 feet by 6 feet, with semicircular arches. In one is a flightof steps leading up above, cut in the rock. A base of a column hadfallen through the roof, and was lying in one of these chambers.
