. Anatomy, descriptive and surgical. intestines, and back again to the spine, forming themesentery, between the layers of which are contained the blood-vessels, nerves, lac-teals, and glands. Lastly, it passes over the left kidney to the sides and anteriorsurface of the descending colon, forming the descending and sigmoid mesocolon, and, reaching the abdominal wall, it passes along it to the middle line of theabdomen. Above the transverse colon (Fig. 570) the peritoneum can be traced, forming thegreater and lesser cavities, and their communication through the foramen of Winslowcan be demonstrated. Commencing in the middle line of the abdomen, the mem-brane may be traced lining its anterior wall, and on the right side sending a processbackward to encircle the obliterated umbilical vein (the round ligament of the liver),forming the falciform or longitudinal ligament of the liver. Continuing its courseto the right, it is reflected over the front of the upper part of the right kidney, 866 ORGANS OF DIGESTION. ROUND Transverse Section of Peritoneum (an arrow has been introducedinto the foramen of Winslow). across the vena cava inferior and aorta, and over the left kidney to the hilum ofthe spleen. From this point it is reflected on to the posterior surface of the stom-ach, which it covers, and fromFig. 570. its right extremity it passes around the vessels passing tothe transverse fissure of theliver, and back again to thestomach as the lesser omen-tum ; and thus it forms theanterior boundary of the fora-men of Winslow. It now cov-ers the front of the stomach, and upon reaching the car-diac extremity it passes to thespleen, which it encloses, form-ing the gastro-splenic omen-tum. From the hilum of thespleen it turns backward toreach the abdominal wall, along which it courses toreach the median line of theabdomen. The foramen of Winslowis bounded in front by thelesser omentum, enclosing the vena portee and the hepatic artery and duct; behindby the inferior vena cav
