It is the third largest city in Germany and attracts many tourists especially during its world famous beer festival called the Oktoberfest. The origins of Munich can be found in its name; Munich meaning monk in old German. Originally just a monastery on the river Isar, it still has a strong religious connection and many famous Bavarian beers are still made by the various catholic religious orders. Munich is famous for its beer ‘Helle’, a light beer made of water, hops and barley. As well as being attractive to tourists, Munich attracts business and financial institutions. On the outskirts of Munich there is a large and busy trade fair known locally as the Messe. Germany is a country situated in central Europe and is considered to be one of the leading powers in the European union. Historically, Germany has always been important in both technical and cultural terms. Germany, as it exists today is a relatively new country formed in 1871. Before this time Germany only existed as a group of Germanic tribes or Kingdoms, which were often conquered and occupied by stronger nations such as the Romans and French. Germany has one of the worlds largest economies and is a federal parliamentary republic. Germany has the Euro for it's currency and is one of the pivotal powers in the European Union. along with France and the United Kingdom.
