The crank-er itself consists of a disk mounted so as to revolve with the engineshaft and carrying a number of pawls which engage the teeth of asmall wheel which turns loosely on the same shaft. A cable, attachedto the piston rod of a cylinder for compressed air or gas, passes arounda spiral drum on the toothed wheel, and is fastened to a spiral springat the other end. When compressed air is turned into the cylinder,the piston unwinds the cable from the drum, the toothed wheelcatches a pawl on the disk, and the engine shaft is revolved; the springthen returns the cable to its former position. The spiral shape ofthe drum gives the accelerated speed of hand cranking. When theengine is running, centrifugal force swings the pawls away from thetoothed wheel. SECTION VII.
