Gardeners, therefore, fromthese causes, and from the generallylow rate of wages they receive, are ofthe number who especially requireoccasional money aid; yet being alsoespecially liable to change their situations, they are con-sequently restrained from becoming members of localFriendly Societies. Other societies, usually called benefit clubs, are chieflybeneficial to the landlords of the inns where they holdtheir meetings, and too often induce some of the membersto spend as much in drinking and smoking as they haveto contribute to the club.
